Fern was active today, she ate her pellets and drank her water. No fur pulled initially. I gave her a handful of dried grass to nest with this afternoon too. This evening she had put the grass on the wire and started pulling fur. Seriously? Building your nest on the wire when you have a clean nest box right there? So I moved it into her nest box. I hope she gets the idea. We will have to wait until after check out tomorrow to go back and see.
You might remember the "hops watermelon" seeds I got earlier this year. I ordered hops seeds on eBay but instead got these nice wooden looking watermelon seeds. I deemed them "hops watermelons" and decided to plant them just to see what kind of watermelon came out of it. SURPRISE!!!! It won't be providing any watermelons at all! Turns out, it's probably a mimosa tree... and now we have two of them. A Google image search resulted in photos of Desmanthus illinoensis seeds that look just like what I planted. So much for watermelons. I guess they're in the legume family. I wonder if their fruit is edible... The kids dug through the strawberry garden and found seven more strawberries. We had to throw out three of them due to slugs eating them, but there were four left for the kids to eat. Today during rabbit chores, Alice was not herself. She hasn't eaten her food, she ate a few dandelions but didn't finish them, and she definitely doesn't want to be petted. Her back end is all messy. It looks like she sat in a wet pile of poop, and I know it's not diarrhea because she's got it all over the sides of her haunches, not just under her tail or down the backs of her legs. She kept laying down like she was uncomfortable. I tried not to disturb her while still refilling her food and water, and giving her a big handful of dried grass to nest with. No fur pulling from her. We went back at 10:30pm to check on her and she is still the same - laying down, grumpy, no nesting. Fern was active today, she ate her pellets and drank her water. We've been referring to it as home, since this is where we've been living. It seems weird to pack everything up and move to another hotel... Still no home to go to.
