The remaining kitten has been named Mippey, after one of our favorite YouTube video "stars" (you can find Mippey5's videos here). Mippey is doing well, nursing often, staying warm, and Mabel is being a diligent, devoted mom. Trinket has become a sort of nanny, keeping Mabel company in the box with Mippey. Floki has taken on a role of guardian, chasing NetherQuart and Zombie away from the box when she thinks they're getting too close. Mabel has attacked Aspie (the dog) on several occasions, but yesterday little #5 got caught in the middle of it. He got a scratch and the dog stepped on him while trying to escape the cat. Now Aspie and Mabel have to take turns being locked up for a while until Mabel isn't so territorial. I expect she will settle down just a soon as Mippey is big enough to escape the box and go explore on his own.
Sadly, we lost one kitten within the first 12 hours. It wouldn't nurse and Mabel kept pushing it away. I did everything I could to keep the little guy alive, but ultimately my attempts were futile. He (or she) will be available to an approved home once three rounds of vaccinations and spay/neuter surgery are completed. We lost a kitten last litter from vaccination complications at 12 weeks old due to small size, so I'm not going to go based on age, but based on size/weight. Mippey won't be able to leave until he is at least 2-pounds (the minimum for spay/neuter surgery). That might be 4 months, or six months, or a year. I don't know. We're just hoping that being a single kitten he will be alright. It's tough being naked and alone.
