Happy Easter to all. Yesterday we went to the spring exotic auction. I had hoped to snag a couple New Zealands, and #2 has taken a small business loan from us to start his own breeding project - he wanted lop earred bunnies. Of course, spring auction brought higher prices, and it was so packed, I've never seen it so full! The prices weren't just high, they were mind boggling. One mini rex sold for $65! You can usually find them for $15-$30 on the local Craigslist pages. We did go a little over budget, but hopefully we can get some babies coming and start to make some of that back. The auction was run better over-all this time, with the announcer clearly stating the tag number on each cage prior to bidding. However, the auction started at 10am and didn't end until after 8pm, with the bulk of the rabbits being the last animals sold. Above you can see that #2 was successful in buying a French Lop doe. She's thin and underweight at the moment, but eating well, and he's caring for her diligently. No he just needs to track down a French Lop buck to pair her to. Where there are usually dozens of New Zealand rabbits to pick from, for whatever reason, this auction had a whopping total of maybe six... and they sold for prices I can't even fathom. I vastly overpaid for two whites. I've been getting numerous inquiries on availability of New Zealands lately, so here goes. I hope to breed them this week, planning for a late April litter which would mean we'd (hopefully) have bunnies to sell come mid to late June. I saw a cute broken tri-color buck and thought he looked like a rex. I didn't pay too terribly much for him, but when I picked him up after the auction I realized he wasn't a rex. He looks more like a rhinelander. He's timid, but not aggressive. I have no use for him, so he is up for sale. He's a large bunny. I'll have to get a weight on him this week. With the addition of the New Zealand buck, once he finishes his 30 day quarantine, he will be replacing George. Once #2 finds a French Lop buck, we will also be pairing it to Penelope (who is half English lop), which means we will have no use for Bennett any more either (unless we decide to pair him back to the Rex girls). He may or may not be available for sale later. He has sentimental value to me, so may end up a fat old pet bunny if we decide to remove him from the breeding lines.
