Last night I was awoken by a loud crack. When I opened my eyes there was flickering light dancing across the ceiling. Fire. I leaped up to the window to see fire atop a neighbor's garage. I admit - I panicked. I felt sick. Fire is one of my worst nightmares - one of my only recurring nightmares, and something I have a very real fear of. Bon fires and camp fires, roasting marshmallows - that's all fine. Light a candle, sure. But a house fire terrifies me. I ran to the door, phone in hand, ready to dial 911, but as I dashed out the front door, I saw the reflection of the police car lights down a side street and could hear the firetruck sirens already on their way. I spent the next 10-15 minutes standing outside watching. It's absolutely amazing the speed that a fire will consume a building, and how quickly the flames attempt to spread. The fire crew came very quickly, but even at that, the garage was a total loss. The police blocked traffic on all side streets, and allowed the firemen to do their job. They were able to contain it, so aside from burning half of the tree that was beside the garage, it didn't spread and nobody was hurt. I'm even more afraid of house fires today than I was yesterday. To see the speed at which that fire spread from a little flame flickering off the side of the roof to fully engulfed scares me to no end. Please folks, make sure your smoke detectors are working, don't leave candles burning, and replace any worn out electrical wiring. Prevent this if at all possible! My prayers to the neighbors across the road for the loss of their garage and vehicle. I'm so glad nobody was hurt or killed and it was able to be contained.
Today was the neighbor's funeral. We went shopping last night to get new attire for the funeral as we usually wear bright colors and designs, and black seemed more appropriate. I guess we didn't get the memo that this was supposed to be a celebration and not a funeral and therefore we were the only ones wearing black. A little embarrassing, but hey, we got nice clothes out of the deal and the kids behaved for the most part. I'm actually impressed. We were the only younger people there. As promised it was a very small gathering. I'm sad that she didn't have more friends, but it was exactly as the neighbor had planned it, so that was good.
