I got the crocus bulbs and some hyacinth bulbs planted around the pipe and shepherd's hook in the new garden. I also managed to get the mulch down in the new garden.
We're supposed to dip below freezing tonight. In preparation, I've brought all of the potted tomatoes, watermelon, squash, okra, and herb plants into the basement. We picked up several light fixtures and hope to see if we can nurse some of these plants though winter. Several of the tomato plants have unripe tomatoes still on the vine, and some are flowering still. I got the crocus bulbs and some hyacinth bulbs planted around the pipe and shepherd's hook in the new garden. I also managed to get the mulch down in the new garden. I pulled the last of the ripe tomatoes from the Old German tomato plant, as it's in the ground and I cannot bring it in. Two had blossom end rot and went to the chickens, and three were good. I found two eggs in the nest box today, and picked only one apple (though several more are ripe). Since we got four eggs yesterday, and only two today, we started looking around the barn to see if perhaps we were missing a preferred nesting spot. Sure enough, behind the brooder in the far back corner we found a stash of five more eggs! Sneaky birds. They have access to seven different nesting boxes in different areas, but only like the one, and some are choosing to nest on the ground anyway. Hmmm. I will have to pick up more wooden slate crates when they're on sale again. Not much else to report. I've been making more of these cute little hair ties, and while I'm setting some aside to sell, I'm also making some custom for the kids. Today I made two, one for #4 in school colors for school spirit day, and one for #3 to match her dress for the school dance. I also finally got a skein of black yarn and a skein of white yarn. How strange is it that I want to make one of the hair tie pieces just with white yarn and then dye it with black walnut husk? I think that would be neat. It would also require me to go harvest some black walnut husk and boil it down for a while. I'll have to consider the amount of time and work it would take.
