As it is the beginning of the year, I'd like to remind everyone of the importance of having functional smoke detectors. These things save lives, but they won't work if they're turned off, missing batteries, or have dead batteries. Check your smoke detectors regularly. I just put fresh batteries in mine and checked to see that they work properly. At bare minimum, you should have at least one smoke detector per floor, and I strongly advise putting one outside your child's bedroom too.
When you check your smoke detectors, and change the battery, take the time to remind your children of basic fire safety. Stop, Drop, and Roll, an escape plan, how to crawl underneath the smoke level, how to check doorknobs for heat, where to meet outside the home in the event of a fire, who to call, and for younger children, a reminder of their address if they need to call 911. A visit to your local fire station may be a good option too.
