In my experience, digital transactions seem to be easier to work out. Transactions that require shipping are a little trickier to work out, but are usually worth it. So far face-to-face interactions have not happened for me, but that's likely due to living in a less populated area, and the fact that I don't really go out and meet people if I can avoid it. But the more people who join, the easier it becomes to find someone local... so please consider checking it out (Simbi). You get some Simbi credits for signing up so you have something to start with, and you can always check the "requests" page to see what you can do to earn more. There's also a push to encourage feedback on every transaction. It's important that people rate and review their transactions to give other people a fair idea of what to expect from someone. It's not the typical eBay feedback either, they actually tend toward offering details and positive encouragement.
A while back I think I posted about a new website I joined, called Simbi. It seems interesting. Basically it's a barter system for goods and services, with a non-cash-value option for trading as well (currency called Simbi which you have to earn by offering services or goods - you can't buy it to get ahead of other people). You can offer services in exchange for simbi credits, sell items for simbi credits plus postage, or find someone with something you want and offer to trade with them. It can be your service for theirs, or their product for your service. Whatever it might be. And people get really creative with what they offer. You can find people willing to send you a postcard, make a custom item for you, do your lawn work, edit your resume, build you a website, or share a recipe. Can't find what you want? There's a place for requests too that allows you to find someone willing to fulfill your needs.
