Today I'm setting up a single Tiny Tim tomato seed in a moist paper towel in a little plastic bag (complete with an adorable little plant marker). I know, I should try more than one seed to make sure I get one to germinate, but I have nowhere else to put a second tomato right now and don't want to waste a seed if more than one sprouts. So this one Tiny Tim tomato seed is (hopefully) destined for yet another aquaponic experiment. This time I'm using a styrofoam ring (padding from a Christmas gift that was headed for the garbage), and a plastic pot. I'll be adding lava rock once the tomato is ready to be moved in. This one will be in the "natural" tank. It's 29-gallons, completely self-sufficient with the exception of needing new water periodically to make up for evaporation. There's one plecostomus and one betta, a handful of snails, and some live seaweed. The tank has been up and running for several years and has enough beneficial bacteria to keep the tank in check. There is a light on a timer that comes on and turns off every 12 hours. This helps the live plants in the tank and will also help with the tomato. Sorry for the blur - he was moving. This is Mister Cellophane, the betta in this tank. He was named after Kurt's first song on Glee. You can't really tell, but his fins have a clear iridescent blue to them. His face and the tip of his tail are black, and his body is a clear white. When we first got him you could see right through his fins. They've gotten darker in the last year. He seems content to patrol the tank and hang out in the plants.
