Today I visited a local shop called The Olde Open Window in downtown Brainerd. It's full of unique locally made wares, and random old stuff - both of which I find immensely interesting. They also have a few store kitties that I got to bribe with treats. This is Lenny. His sister Eva wasn't interested in being in the photo, but he was happy to pose. While we were there, we picked up some soap. This particular soap is made locally by my Mom's good friend Ellen. I'm not usually one to buy fancy scented bath products, but this stuff is fantastic! She makes it in all kinds of different scents, some of them she adds luffa to for a scrubby (right in the soap), and some are shaped, while others are plain rectangles. Just smelling all the options is a joy. I also love how each one is individually tied and labeled. She really puts some time and thought into each soap. Anyway, if you can't visit The Olde Open Window in downtown Brainerd, you can still check out the handmade soaps by Ellenby on her website! Today I picked out Cranberry Lime, but I've got a small hoard of other scents too as I ask my Mom for some every year for Christmas. I also highly recommend First Snow, and my Mom suggests the Patchouli. After our outing, I took the kids on a little nature walk around my parents' property. We found this very interesting tree. It appears to have been struck by lightning, split in half, and then fell over, but is still (barely) attached by the bark. The top portion of the tree is in pieces, scattered around the area (as is typical with a lightning strike). Toward the end of our walk, #3 found an interesting patch of red moss on a fallen tree. It's taller than the green moss, and was just catching the last light of day like a spotlight.
