I walked the container garden again today and I found some disheartening results. Josh (the goose) has destroyed all but one of my pepper plants, killed all of my strawberry plants that I've lovingly nursed since last summer, all of my rhubarb seedlings from this year's winter sowing are gone, and he pulled out and killed three of my Bosc pear tree seedlings that had finally started to look healthy again after being lost in tall grass at the old house. I love this goose, but some days he makes me so mad. What am I to do next year when we have a much bigger garden? The whole point of having ducks and a goose is that I wouldn't have to spend the extra to fence in my garden to protect it from them.
I did manage to salvage eight tomatoes today. Two ripe, one nearly ripe, and one green Lemon Boy tomatoes - the green and partially ripe ones were on a plant Josh destroyed. The four dark ones are from an F1 Indigo tomato plant. They get so much sun from dusk til dawn that the entire tomatoes have largely turned dark, making it difficult to see when they're ripe (when the green turns red). Today I found two with cracks from being over-ripe!
Today we also tried to look up prices and plans for hanging the rabbit cages up off the ground without wood supports like we had before. Right now they're low to the ground, set on cinder blocks to get them up off the ground. They can't stay like that over winter because the manure will freeze and pile up. They need to be higher up. It's also easier to clean the cages out when they're higher up. I'm not sure when that will be in the budget, but hopefully before it gets too cold.
I did manage to get mostly caught up on house chores today. The living room is back in order, and most of the dishes got washed today. I just need to wash the crock pot out.
