Mittens

Mittens was born 6/15/17 to Alice and Sushi.  For some reason, Mittens lost all of his toes on his front feet except his thumbs (dewclaws), and several toes on his back feet.  We aren't sure why.  It's likely that his momma chewed them off while grooming a little overzealously (not uncommon in rabbits).  Due to the graphic nature of the photos of Mittens' feet, I have made a special page just to show them to curious onlookers.

Mittens, at 10 days old - you can tell something isn't right about his toes.

7/2/17, 17 days old, all of Mittens' front toes are missing but his thumbs and he is given the name of Mittens as a result.
Let me note here that if at any point we felt that Mittens was in pain, we would seek pain medication for him.  If we felt that he would be unable to lead a pain-free life, we would put him out of his misery.  As of this posting 7/4/17, Mittens moves around the hutch the same as his siblings.  He now leaves the straw area to follow momma out onto the wire area with no hesitation.  The feet look angry and sore in the photo above, but he has never taken issue with me inspecting him and checking on his feet.  We will continue to monitor his feet to make sure he heals up and does not get any infection in there.  It is still yet to be seen if he will regrow fur there or not, but there are plenty of bunnies out there missing toes who live perfectly normal lives.  It just means he won't ever be able to be a show bunny, which fortunately wasn't in his future anyway (he's a mixed breed).  As a pet bunny, it will mean that his new family will get nail trims done in half the time!

7/4/17, 19 days old, the right foot has healed completely over (no sores) and the left foot is looking much better. Skin is healthy pink, no angry red. You can see here that he has both thumb nails intact.

Back right foot has three partial toes and one complete toe.

Back left foot has all toes accounted for

7/12/17 - at 27 days old, Mittens's feet have completely healed up. No more scabs, and the fur is starting to grow over his feet to hide the missing toes. By the time he's weaned, he may end up looking perfectly normal.
