PI 399169 Phaseolus vulgaris
PI 399169 is Phaseolus vulgaris (beans), with no given name. It originated in Nicaragua and came to me through the Washington State University (facility W6). The package indicated 87i (inventory from 1987?) though the accompanying paperwork had 2013i (inventory from 2013?). The envelope also specified there were 30 germ (seeds) weighing 7.5 grams. However, I receieved 44 seeds with a total weight of 9.4 grams (30 beans weighed 6.5 grams). The largest seed measured 12mm by 7mm. The smallest seed measured 7mm by 5mm. The seeds are kidney shaped, uniform brick red with a black ringed white mark on the inner arc of the bean. They are shiny (reflective to camera flash).
On Tuesday, March 4, 2014, I planted two seeds into a recycled indoor container. It has been placed in a warm location with indirect sunlight. Once seedlings sprout, the container will be moved under a grow light.
On the morning of Friday, March 7, 2014, one seed has begun to sprout above ground. The red seed has pushed up above the soil as well, and one root is visible from the outside of the container and is already 7cm below the surface.
By the evening, the second bean has broken the surface, but no roots are visible on that side of the container.
100% germination at 3 days.

On Saturday, March 8, 2014, the seed that sprouted first yesterday is now taller (6cm) and already sprouting its first leaves. The smaller seedling today is where the bigger seedling was yesterday in size (2cm). The container has been moved to in front on a grow light.
Sunday, March 9, 2014 - both seedlings are now sprouting well veined leaves from between the thicker pieces. I assumed the thicker pieces were the original seed, but it appears this part now functions as rudimentary leaves underneath the new ones that are coming in. These seedlings are growing fast! The shorter one measures 8cm, and the taller is 12cm tall already.
Monday, March 10, 2014 - the taller plant is now 14cm tall. The smaller plant has nearly caught up in growth in 24 hours. The leaves are spreading out. The leaves are arrow-head shaped.
Tuesday, March 11, 2014 - The taller seedling is now 14.5cm tall. The smaller seedling has unfurled its leaves.
Wednesday, March 12, 2014 - The taller seedling now measures 14.5cm, with a leaf length of 5.5cm and 5cm from stem insert to tip.
The smaller seedling measures 13.5cm. with a leaf length of 4cm and 3.5cm from stem insert to tip.

Thursday, March 13, 2014 - The taller seedling measures 14.5cm tall and the leaf bud at the top of the stem between the leaves is slightly more identifiable as a leaf.
The shorter seedling measures 13.5cm with a nub of a leaf bud at the top of the stem between the leaves.
I added more soil to the container today.

Friday, March 14, 2014 - The seedlings measure 10 and 12cm tall now. The discrepancy is from the additional soil I added to the container yesterday.
Saturday, March 15, 2014 - The taller seedling measures 10.5cm tall with an additional 1cm leaf on top. Yesterday the top leaf was straight up, today it has curled to the side, making it appear shorter (the difference between yesterday and today's measurements). The shorter seedling measures 10cm with an additional 5mm leaf bud on top.
Sunday, March 16, 2014 - The taller seedling measures 11cm tall with an additional 1.5cm leaf bud on top. The leaves measure 7 and 6.5cm from stem to tip.
The shorter seedling measures 10cm tall with an additional 1cm leaf bud on top. the leaves measure 6 and 5.5cm from stem to tip.

Monday, March 17, 2014 - The shorter seedling measures 10cm tall with an additional 1cm leaf bud on top. The leaves measure 5.5 and 6cm from stem to tip.
The taller seedling measures 11cm tall with an additional 3cm leaf bud and stem growth on top. The leaves measure 6.5 and 7cm from stem to tip.

Thursday, March 20, 2014 - The newest top leaves are getting bigger.
Saturday, April 5, 2014 - The seedlings continue to grow taller and grow more leaves. Within the last 24 hours the bottom set of leaves has started to wilt. I'm not sure why this is. I have moved the container from the artificial grow lights to the South-facing window in hopes this will perk up the plants.
Thursday, April 17, 2014 - Something really interesting has happened! The bean plants have produced flowers, but they aren't all the same color. there are two white flowers, and one yellow flower. Both measure 1-1.5cm from stem/bud end to end of petals.
Saturday, April 26, 2014 - The day after the last photo was taken, all of the flowers turned yellow. Beans are now growing from both plants, the largest nearly spanning the width of all four of my fingers. There are several much smaller beans growing as well.
Only the largest bean produced seeds. The smaller beans wilted away. The bean pod was allowed to dry on the plant, and produced three seeds. I will try this variety outside next spring to see how it does outdoors.
