PI 665192 - Lactuca sativa - "Juliet"
PI 665192 is Lactuca sativa (lettuce), that is also known as "Juliet." It originated in California (USA), and came to me via Washington State University (facility W6). This variety arrived 3/1/14 and are marked 2011i on the envelope (presumably that means that the seeds were harvested in 2011). The seeds are beige/tan and measure 4mm long by 1mm across. There is a red substance (appears to be chaff) that came with the seeds. There were 397 seeds (weighing .3g) included in our envelope. That's nearly double the 200 the website said they'd send.
On Tuesday, March 4, 2014, I planted five seeds into a recycled indoor container. The container has been placed in a warm location with indirect sunlight. Once the seedlings sprout, the container will be moved under a growth light.
Monday, March 10, 2014 - this morning one seedling appeared, and by this evening a second came up. They currently measure 1.5 and 2cm tall. This gives a 40% germination rate at 6 days after planting.
Tuesday, March 11, 2014 - still only two seeds have germinated (40% germination at one week). The seedlings now measure 25 and 30mm. I have removed the lid on the container, so the humidity will not be so high.
Wednesday, March 12, 2014 - Seedlings are both 4.5cm tall. The seedling closer to the name stick is growing more upright with a slight hunch, while the seedling farther from the name stick is leaning toward the light.
Thursday, March 13, 2014 - I've moved this container closer to the light today.
Seedlings measure 55mm each.
Seedlings measure 55mm each.
Friday, March 14, 2014 - Due to moving the container to a different location, the seedlings have both perked up and changed the direction they are facing (toward the light, which is now on the other side). Seedlings measure the same as yesterday (5.5cm).
Saturday, March 15, 2014 - Seedlings measure 5.5 and 6cm each. The shorter one closer to the identifier stick has grown and tipped toward the light.
Sunday, March 16, 2014 - Seedlings measure 6 and 7cm tall.
Monday, March 17, 2014 - Seedlings remain 6 and 7cm each.
Thursday, March 20, 2014 - The seedlings are tipping over and look dried out, despite being watered.
As of March 30, 2014 both seedlings had died. I will attempt them again in the spring outside. The indoor experiment has ended in failure.
