Yellow Wonder Alpine Strawberry

1/18/2015

Color:  Cream to Yellow
Shape:  Thin Strawberry
Size:  1/2 to 1 inch long
DTM:  Unknown
Notes:  Ever-bearing yellow variety is aromatic and considered "gourmet" due to the excellent flavor.  Because it doesn't turn red, birds will likely ignore it, which is good because it tends to produce fewer berries than the red varieties.  It must be shaded somewhat from direct sunlight, but don't grow it in full shade.  Yellow Wonder does not produce runners, which makes it ideal for container gardening and borders.  It grows as a perennial in zones 6 and warmer, but can be overwintered in cooler locations with lots of mulch.  Easy to grow from seed and easy to re-seed (just plant a whole berry and you'll get volunteers next season).

Emmy Tomato

Color:  Orange/Yellow
Shape:  Oblate, almost boxy
Size:  Unknown
DTM:  90
Notes:  Indeterminate.  It seems like nobody has ever grown this out to add their own comments.  Every single reference I've found online is the same origin story that was given in 2012 when Seed Savers Exchange offered the seeds for the first time.  In fact, every photo I've found is the exact same as the one taken from SSE in 2012.  What's up with this tomato?  I'll need to grow it out to get more information (and when I do, I'll post it for the rest of the world to see).

Color:  Yellow

Notes:  Indeterminate heirloom from Mexico, requires support for large plants.  Prolific production, regular leaf.  Sometimes a mutant white version shows up.

Color:  Yellow with Orange stripes
Shape:  Oblate, sometimes irregular
Size:  12-16 ounces
DTM: 80-90
Notes:  Indeterminate, open pollinated, regular leaf, cross between Green Zebra and Marvel Stripe.  Originally bred to be red with yellow stripes, but selectively bred since then by another seller to be yellow with red stripes.  Red with yellow stripes is Jeff Dawson strain.  Yellow with red stripes is Gary Ibsen strain.  Also called Tigercopia?

Bosque Blue Bumblebee Tomato

Color:  Dark Purple over Yellow
Shape:  Cherry
Size:  salad-sized
DTM:  70
Notes:  Indeterminate variety created by J and L Gardens and released in 2012.  Plants grow to six feet tall, and tomatoes are deep purple on top and yellow on the bottom.  I have seen this one also labeled as "Purple Yellow Light Bulb" which is the wrong name.  This variety should not be confused with older sibling Bosque Blue, which is a similar but different variety (from the same tomato breeder).  I have not been able to track down details on exact tomato size or if it needs to be caged/staked.

Pineapple Tomatillo

Color:  Yellow
Shape:  Round
Size:  Cherry/Blueberry
DTM:  75, 85-100
Notes:  Open Pollinated, but does require a second plant to produce fruit (not self-pollinating).  Prolific plants are said to get four feet tall and four feet wide, but numerous reports of tomatillo plants getting much larger.  Will self-seed if given the opportunity.  Fruit is ready to be picked when it swells and splits the husk.

Azoychka Tomato

Color:  Yellow
Shape:  Beefsteak
Size:  5-10 ounces, 3 inches
DTM:  60-80
Notes:  Very productive indeterminate variety, does require staking.  Regular leaf, good disease resistance.  I've found reports of people getting up to 50 tomatoes per plant!  Short shelf life of about two days, so use them fresh as soon as they're picked.

Color:  Red with Yellow Stripes
Shape:  Round/Cherry
Size:  Ping Pong Ball or smaller
DTM:  60-70
Notes:  Also known as Amurskiy Tigr or Siberian Tiger.  This variety is from Russia.  It's semi-determinate.  Red with stripes.  You can tell this one is ripe when the stripes change from green to yellow.  Productive, but may crack if ripe fruit is left in the rain.

I'm setting up this blog to keep track of the seed stash that is quickly overtaking the box.  By using the Categories, I will be able to sort the seeds by color, variety, etc to make it easier to find information when I need it.

    Seed Stash Blog

In an attempt to keep my seed stash organized, and yet easily accessible, I'm going to use this blog.  The plan is to make a blog post for each seed variety as I research it, tagging it to pertinent information.  That way, I can come back later and search through the seed stash (even if I'm not at home), or sort results by growing factors!

Many of these varieties are available for trade.  If you'd like to trade, please let me know what you're looking for, and what you have available for trade!
